Half Double Crochet Tutorial

Step 1: To begin your chain row, create a slip knot & then chain any desired number of stitches (for this tutorial, I used 15 to form my foundation chain). After chaining 15, you're all set to initiate the first row.

sl kn, ch 15

Step 2: Yarn over(yo) & insert the hook into the second chain(ch) from the hook.

Locate 2nd ch. yo, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook.

Step 3: Then yarn over(yo) again & draw up a loop by pulling the yarn back through the ch your in. You should now have 3 loops on your hook.

Step 4: Now, yarn over(yo) once more & pull yarn back through all three loops on the hook at once. Congratulations, you've just completed your first half double crochet(hdc)!

yo again,
& pull through all 3 loops at once.

To finish the row, continue repeating from Step 2-4 until the end of the row, except as you proceed, do not work into the second chain from the hook, move on to the next chain in the row working 1 hdc into each ch across. By following this pattern, you'll successfully complete your first row!

Step 5: To be clear, locate the next chain(ch) in the row, then follow steps 2-4 to make a hdc in each st until you reach the end of the row. A total of 14 sts.

Locate next ch. 1 hdc in each ch until end of row(14sts)

Depending on the pattern you will typically chain(ch) 1 or 2 then turn.

For this one you will ch. 1, turn your work, & work 1 hdc in the first st(not the ch 1 st but the top of the first hdc of the previous row), & in each st across.

Step 6: To be clear - locate the top of the first hdc of the previous row(Not the Ch 1). & follow the steps to make a hdc in that st & in each st across. (14 sts)

Locate the top of the 1st hdc from the previous row.
1 hdc in first ch st.
& 1 hdc in each st across. (14sts)

Step 7: Remember to ch. 1 before turning at the end of each row. Continue to follow steps until you've made a 4"x 2" or 4" x 4" block or until you are comfortable. When you are ready to fasten off, cut your working end, yo, & pull through your loop, then pull the yarn to secure it, then weave in your ends.

Fasten off, weave in any remaining ends.

Congratulations! You've completed your first Half Double Crochet (hdc) Block! Continue to practice & explore!
